SPECULATIVE LAB WEEK 5

MONDAY 8TH

NIGHT TIME

SARA PROPOSED IMITATING FIREFLIES AN NIGH-TIME OR CREATING A REAL HABITAT/ENCLOSURE FOR FIREFLIES. IT PERFECTLY FITS OUR CONCEPT LINKING TOGETHER OUR HABITAT AND LIGHTING THEMES AS WELL AS THE SENSE OF MAGIC AND WONDER YET STILL REFLECTING THE LIGHTS ACROSS DIGBETH. AND WE CAN DELVE INTO IT FURTHER THROUGH PROJECTION, UNDERSTANDING FIREFLY HABITATS, SEASONS ETC..

TUESDAY 7TH

We reflected upon what we did so far in regards to the criteria, as well as my group mates individual contributions.

ESSAY STRUCTURE

PROJECT

How well can we develop our coursework’s purpose?

  • Fundamental purpose: to give people creative freedom and a sense of tranquility, by creating a unique space which engages the Birmingham community and preserves its artwork/artists, graffiti art, socialising, relaxing.

PRE SURVEY

  • Create a lore for it to gain engagement

  • A safe space for public artists without criminalisation and censorship.

  • Performance space at night on some days - night life

  • Promoting underground artists, unrecognised emerging creatives.

  • sustain=inability - speculative reality existence Minecraft

  • Peaceful Political Stand against council development against artists and world issues

  • Expanding audience, introducing a natural habitat in digbeth- birds - fireflies.

  • Collaborate with digbeth gardening organisations, help preserve natural space

  • Melting Pot and common curiosity - working with/promoting independent BUSINESSES in digbeth, building income.

  • Human Needs- evoking mindfulness, escapism from depression, normality of life, spiritual psychological needs.

POST SURVEY

********

How well can we develop our coursework’s usability?

Original usability: canvases for art, rainbow projection and garden for health.

DEVELOPMENT

  • sculptural canvases - engage public

  • Multipurpose app for accessibility, containing multiple speculative realities

  • Portal for virtual events to promote artists and community

  • Fun drawing software like procreate

  • Minecraft universe

  • Historical Archive of the site

  • Lenses? Recycled materials

  • Natural Placements + Lighting

  • Originally was settled g with Sketch-up software, now we can use twin motion to better visualise our garden in less time.

How well can we develop our courseworks aesthetic appeal?

  • Amelie” app frames for drawing.

  • Sculptural Canvases , nomad

  • Twin motion simulation

  • Placement

  • Fireflies

CONTEXT

What are the needs of the planet/digbeth?

  • Environmental (i.e. more natural spaces)

  • Pollution, natural preservation, oxygen, harmony in our ecosystem.

Or

  • Ethical (i.e. preservation of art and culture, alongside the natural world) :

  • artistic preservation, public community art spaces, human connection, encouraging talent, a bit of magic and wonder, mindfulness, absence from modern technology.

PERSONAL SELF

  • What are things that we learned in First Year?

  • E.g. I learned to organise tasks early on, reflecting on the brief before beginning our project instead of the end, so that we can work with organisation and strong intention.

  • A range of softwares and transferable skills - sketchup, twin motion, 3d printing, surveying, etc..

  • To not panic and not have to work independently in a group setting, giving others tasks.

  • Taking individual skills and combining them.

REFLECTING ON GROUP CONTRIBUTIONS

KORDIAN - proposal of art centre and performance spacing promoting and encouraging underground artists, brought a more in depth functionality to our space in a way which enhanced it. Created app logo and home design immediately. Speculated a minecraft version of the site which he had fun with. Delves into a lot of artistic influences unlinked me, witch brung depth to our graffiti scene.

ELLEANA - Done loads. she proposed the flower garden, arrangements and colour schemes. During the project she decided to experiment with something new - graffiti art, and the digital means of creating it. Created a range of designs. Looked into development and regeneration projects, stakeholders and businesses.

SARA -  began with logo designs researching graffiti, then shifted focus towards the natural aspect ( something we have neglected) of the garden after visiting a local community event for Palestine. Plants gardening, habitats. Later on she proposed the beautiful idea to improve the concept by including a firefly enclosure which would illuminate the night, mimicking the lighting throughout Digbeth. She, through further research and designs, helped balanced our project thematically.

AMELIE: made significant contributions. Took a lot of initiative to research topics like the historical figures and political significance of graffiti, the physics behind simulating the rainbow and ways to adapt that with the sculptural canvases, visualising our habitats using AI or procreate, and understanding what conditions would effectively work for an ecosystem to thrive in and underground train arch. She considered things that we didn’t t such as the stakeholders needs , which helped fill any gaps in out coursework. Also took I up the role of creating the survey which relieved me from a lot of unnecessary stress, together we gathered data in a few days. Amelie also proposed layered walls for the app, like in procreate which is amazing because I struggled to visualise how to make the app creative in itself.

ME: made the initial proposal idea but wanted to incorporate the essential elements of everyone else’s proposal into mine to create something new and unique, analysed brief, researched additional themes, organised group a bit and experimented with software.

WEDNESDAY 8TH

Today I came in to develop my Twinmotion project.

FRIDAY 10TH

Run through Presentations - FEEDBACK

  • 'We' not 'I'. Structure themes thematically not individually because this is a group project.

  • Summarise some parts, research section in particular.

  • Decent presentation.
